SUMMARY:Old Portlians Reliability Trial 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Old Portlians Reliability Trial is a comfortingly old-fashioned event\, a traditional kickstart to the year to test whether your bike and body have both made it through the winter intact. The Old Ports club members are warm and welcoming and refreshments are oldskool – homemade cakes\, tea and butties rather than gels and electrolytes. Even the entry price is friendly – just £5 !!!!! \nThere are usually some light refreshments at the Ashdown Forest car park (half way point) plus hopefully a few more cakes left back at the village hall! \nSign-on starts at 8am with first riders leaving at 9am. Take some cash for the entry fee and refreshments. \nThere are no RFID timing chips\, instead there’s an official with a stopwatch who will stamp your rider’s card as you leave and return. \nGetting there – Knockolt is a 16 mile ride from the De Ver shop so those riding there may need to start early (before 7:30). If you’re driving there’s plenty of parking at the village hall and in Knockolt village\, or trains from Sydenham Hill / West Dulwich via Orpington to Knockolt Station (49 mins) \nCheck Tim’s write-up of the 2024 Reliability trial on our blog. \nRoutes\nThere are two routes – \nClassic Route 108km on RidewithGPS or Garmin Connect \nShorter Route 65km on RidewithGPS or Garmin Connect \nThe routes have changed quite a bit for 2025\, the links above refer to the new routes. \nThe NEW Classic Route leads through pretty country lanes eastwards to Ightam\, then winds its way south. The first 36 mi/58km have changed quite a lot\, taking the route further east. It rejoins the old route for the long drag up to Ashdown Forest and at the corner of the forest (40mi/65km) you turn back north and are rewarded with a long fast straight descent to Hartfield. After that you have new roads again through Cowden\, Markbeech and Hever. The last stretch is back to normal through Edenbridge and Toys Hill\, then the final climb is now Star Hill instead of Polhill. \nPlease be warned there may be last minute alterations due to road closures or bad weather conditions. The OPCC club members at the Village Hall will advise of any changes. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Ride of the Falling Leaves 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Ride of the Falling Leaves is an annual sportive organised by local South London club Dulwich Paragon. The routes follow pretty lanes\, many of which we cover on Team De Ver club rides. Entry fee is cheap and usually includes coffee & croissant at the start and a meal and pint at the finish! (option of chicken or vegan). A good number of De Ver riders take part each year from all groups A-B-C. \nThis year’s ROTFL will be held on Sunday 6 October. Registration is now open via RiderHQ. Details of the event are published on the Dulwich Paragon website. Register early to avoid disappointment 😉 \nRoutes\nThe routes (70km/105km) have remained largely unchanged over the years. They always start at the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome\, before heading up and over Crystal Palace and out of London via Layhams Road. The first challenge is the climb to Woldingham\, after which the routes split. There is a food stop at Velo Barn at 22km(short) or 46km(long). There’s a nice description of the route on the DP website. \nThe official routes are published on ridewithgps – Short and Long. \nWe have made both routes available for club members via Garmin Connect\, they are expected to be same as 2021-2023. There may be last minute tweaks (road closures etc) so please check the Dulwich Paragon and RiderHQ pages for updates on the day. \nLong Route 105km\nhttps://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/132022347 \n \nShort Route 75km\nhttps://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/132022459

SUMMARY:Dunwich Dynamo 2024
DESCRIPTION:Mark the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July on your calendar. \nWe have listed this as a Sportive but it is NOT a sportive. It is a tradition. An experience. A wonderful thing that should be ticked-off on every cyclist’s bucket list. \nIf you’ve never ridden through the night before\, this is the one to do – the big one\, the best one\, the real deal. Every year it’s a different experience depending on who you are with\, who you meet\, what the weather is like\, and for all the random stuff that happens on the way. \nTHIS IS NOT A RACE! – It’s about the journey\, not the destination! \nLegend has it\, the first DD was in the early ’90s when a couple of bike couriers who were tired of their week in London\, they set off riding into the night and just kept going until they reached the sea. They ended up at the beach of Dunwich in time to watched the sun rise over the sea. \nHistorical fact: Dunwich (Saxmundham) was once a thriving port city and capital of East Anglia that over 100s of years of coastal erosion has completely disappeared into the sea. \nSome basic background details – \n\nIt takes place on the weekend of the full moon nearest to the date of the summer solstice\, to get the longest brightest warmest night\nOrganisation is deliberately minimal – there is no entry fee\, no timing chips\, no start line\, no finish line\, no entry fee\, no marshals\nThe ride starts at the Pub on the Park in Hackney\, East London\, with everyone slowly gathering in London Fields during the evening\nYou leave when you’re ready\, generally any time between 7-10pm with most leaving between 8-9pm\nThe distance is around 112 miles (180km) with not much climbing\, about 4600 feet (1400m)\nThere is no official map of the route but instead a list of places/waypoints. But we are in the 2020s so GPS routes are available online (example below)\nPubs are open on the way\, many riders will stop Moreton which is the first quiet country village\, other pubs in Finchingfield etc stay open all night serving cake and coffee\nThere is usually a village hall open half-way where you can open up your own picnic or buy soup/roll\, plus locals sometimes also offer bbq/breakfast in their garden\nWhen you arrive at the beach in Dunwich\, dump your bike and go and have a greasy spoon breakfast in the cafe (cans of beer/cider available) then go for a dip in the sea\nThe only organised part is by Southward Cyclists\, who organise a convoy of coaches from Dunwich to London (bikes in removal vans) which must be booked in advance (cost £49.99)\nGetting home by train is possible but difficult so don’t rely on the local station\, you may need to ride to Ipswich and there are likely to be strict restrictions where you require valid bike booking in advance\nOther routes home include parking nearby on Friday/Saturday and take the train home\, talk a loved one into driving the beach car park to pick you up\, or just ride all the way back\nAdvice: Rest and sleep well the night before\, have a good meal on Saturday afternoon\, make sure your bike lights are fully charged or have new batteries and switch your rear to constant (not flashing)\, those behind you will be grateful. Enjoy the ride!\n\n\nResources\nThe Dunwich Dynamo Facebook page is a great source of information and news\nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/DunwichDynamo \nUnofficial site with some useful information/links\nhttps://www.dunwichdynamo.co.uk/ \nLondon School of Cycling\, check their advice link\nhttps://www.londonschoolofcycling.co.uk/content.php?id=18 \nInformation on the area in Dunwich\nhttps://www.thesuffolkcoast.co.uk/suffolk-coast-towns-and-villages/dunwich \nSouthwark Cyclists website have confirmed they will organise a coach service this year (link might not be live until late-March)\nhttps://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/product/dunwich-dynamo-2024/ \nRoute on RidewithGPS\nhttps://ridewithgps.com/routes/24093 \n\n\nfrom London School of Cycling website:\nThe Dunwich Dynamo is a 200 km night ride from London to the lost city of Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast. From 1992 to 1998 it ran as commercial pay-to-enter event. In 1999 it became a free\, traditional event; something like Christmas but with less eating and more travelling by bike. This successful format has continued since 2000. \nSetting a date for an informal ‘turn-up-and-ride’ event – on the Saturday night nearest a full moon in July – maintains the most important element of the great festival of frivolity\, the company of other riders. \n\n\nCredit: Christine Stuc 2019 \nCredit: Mark Dalby 2017 \nCredit: Phil Thrower 2023

SUMMARY:Dragon Ride 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Dragon Ride is one of the oldest and most iconic sportives in the UK\,  renowned as being the toughest  and most legendary in the British Isles. It will\, once again\, be returning to Margam Park for what will be the 20th edition – The date is set for Sunday 23 June 2024. \nLou Lusardi birthed the very first Dragon Ride in 2004\, with just 280 riders\, he was inspired by the popularity of Italian Gran Fondo’s in his home country. At the time there were only a handful of sportives in the UK and Lou saw an opportunity to bring this type of event to the Brecon Beacons. An insight that has proven correct and stood the test of time\, with thousands every year now slaying the gruelling Dragon Ride. \nThis has been a very popular event for Team De Ver riders\, there are usually between 5-10 riders taking part\, most of whom select the “Gran Fondo”. \nFour routes/distances available – \n\nMacmillan 100 (98km)\nMedio Fondo (157km)\nGran Fondo (213km)\nDragon Devil (296km)\n\nAs of October 2023 the initial 3\,000 places were filled and public entries were closed. A further 1\,500 places will be released in the New Year\, it is recommended to pre-register for priority access via the website. \nRegistration link – https://www.dragonride.co.uk/enter-event/ – if standard entry places sell out\, there may still be options for Charity entry (supporting Macmillan) and Premium entry (higher cost). \nWorth noting there was also an Earlybird loyalty offer open to past riders giving £10 discount – https://www.dragonride.co.uk/slayer-loyalty-rewards/ – if you participated in previous years you may be able to use this.
