Dunwich Dynamo 2025

Myself, Enda and Andrew all took part in this year’s Dunwich Dynamo. Setting off from the Pub in the Park in Hackney Fields in the early evening and riding through the night under the first full moon following the summer solstice and longest day.

This is an unofficial event with all sort of riders and skill levels taking part with all sorts of bikes adorned with amazing light displays. It’s an unofficial event but the locals of Essex and Suffolk lay on refreshment stops along the way and come out with cow bells and deck chairs to cheer you on as you go past.

It was a clear and beautiful evening mostly warm with some chilly spots at times but under a stunning full moon which lit the way with a sea of red tail lights to follow from the other cyclists. The 112 mile route is fairly flat with only one categorised hill which was more of a drag similar to Brixton Hill. The roads were lovely and amazingly pot hole free, and being at night largely free of motor traffic as well.

Then as the sun came up we arrived at the barren and pebbly  Dunwich to a beach sprawled in bikes while the cyclists took a quick dip in the sea. Southwark Cyclists had laid on some coaches to get home. Where I was lucky and got a lift home, Enda and Andrew turned around and headed back, with them completing an amazing 400km and 411km respectively.

It’s definitely one for your bucket list, and the beauty of it being unofficial is you can check the weather before you commit!
