Tour de Streatham Wells – Family Bike Ride Fun

Adults and children on their bikes

On the 19th November, around 30 families from Streatham took part in the inaugural Tour de Streatham – a family friendly group ride around the local neighbourhood designed to encourage kids and newer riders to get on their bikes and enjoy the thrill of riding with a group of likeminded people.

The idea for the ride had started a while back in idle chats between myself and a neighbour, both of us griping about the difficulties in getting our kids from riding in local parks, to moving them on to being confident and safer riders on London roads.

With the Streatham Wells LTN being implemented in October, we decided to seize the opportunity, and on a cold but dry day, we started out from Valley Road playing fields and did a couple of large loops of the local streets.

The whoops of joy, happy chattering and shouts of “BRILLIANT” were exactly what we had hoped to achieve – and we even got featured on road.cc: https://road.cc/content/news/cycling-live-blog-21-november-2023-305199.

We are now planning to do a regular monthly ‘family ride’, and we are also planning on running events for older kids who might want to do more challenging rides (hills, longer journeys or muddier trails).
