Hampshire Hilly Hundred 2026 – Rider Review
Who would’ve predicted that my virgin Hampshire Hilly Hundred, would’ve been so incredible. There were 2 routes to choose from, shorter 68 miles, and longer 102 miles. I went for the Endurance route, obviously! My Garmin noted 17 climbs alltogether, which seems ominous at first. However, most were short (<700m long) averaging 3-7%, with only two clocking into double digits at 12%.
Thankfully, pre-race correspondence was excellent, providing specific travel instructions, which meant access to Sparsholt College was seamless. You’re met by an army of Marshalls directing cars to free parking spaces. Registration in the morning was also remarkably accommodating, well signposted and quickly handled. I was in and out in less than a minute.
Though the race organisers warned of potholes, there was very little enroute. Every turn was signposted clearly, and the feed station(s), albeit just the one doubling up as 1st & 2nd stop-over, was well stocked, with plenty of encouraging staff to spur you on. There was also a decent mechanic available. Though, I didn’t need him, I heard he was super helpful. The route went along country lanes mostly, with a few ‘A’ road sections. You could be forgiven if you made frequent stops too just for the views.
At the end, I was offered a free sports massage, non-alcoholic beer and more treats. This was so helpful as I was suffering from cramps throughout the day. Though I opted for the ‘no medals’ option, which reduced costs, there was still a bit of fanfare awaiting you at the line to top off the ride. There were two food trucks for the needed replen at the end, a woodfired Pizza truck and a mobile Cafe. I picked up a sizeable Pizza sandwich for a £10, which paired very well with my non-alcoholic beer.
I am certainly hoping to return next year, and hope we’ll consider adding this Sportive to the Team De Ver calendar. Mark it in for May 2027!
